Home Tours and Cold Beer!
Back in the earlier days of my real estate career I had connected with a couple via my website from Kentucky, we communicated back and forth over a couple of months regarding wants, needs and homes of good potential. They ultimately set a date, flight schedules and hotel itinerary. I was geared up and ready for a lengthy tour of about 20 homes all in the nearby Sandia Mountains. These folks were looking for a mountain property which can be a challenge but I was determined to help them find their dream home.
I arrived at their hotel at 9:00am and they greeted me as if I were a long lost friend, I felt a connection. I had to notice however my new customer Billy Bob (name changed to protect the guilty) was drinking a beer...recall now it’s 9:00am...seemed odd! We chit chat a bit and they gather their personal effects for the day. Billy Bob then grabs a handle on this large cooler on the floor and asked me to help him put it in my trunk! Uhh (rookie mistake here) sure! Just as we drop this behemoth into my trunk he opens it up & grabs another cold one..I can see this is going to get interesting.
So my clients were planning Home Tours and Cold Beer!
We pile in my car and off we go! About the time we hit highway speed Billy Bob lights up a cigarette THEN asks if he can smoke IN MY CAR..Uhh (another rookie mistake) sure...grumbling roll down the window please. At our first stop, Billy Bobs first priority was to grab another brewsky but this time one for his wife as well then he lights up another stoggie..OMG! What have I done? It’s too late to look back...right? Are they serious? Are they practicing alcoholics just trying keep the edge off or party animals looking for a free ride? My mind is racing for sure but I press on. So we tour homes while they drink cold beer, smoke their ciggies and just having one whale of a good time! I am having fun, I think! Now please don’t think they are rude or anything, I mean they did offer to share their canned delights! Let's all get inebriated right? I finally put my foot down when they started to walk through people's homes while sucking their ciggies n sippin their suds and Billy Bob decided it was ok to pee on their trees. Beer in Beer out ya know. This is like a flashback to my High School days.
Long story with a short ending! They both got pretty hammered but miraculously we planned on yet another day to tour some remaining home...Oy Vey.
I went to pick them up the following day as planned but no one was around. I never saw or heard from them again! Obviously I was played and I suspect they had pulled this trick before, why, I can’t imagine other than a free chauffeur while enjoying home tours and cold beer. Just for fun ya know.
