Thanksgiving In An Albuquerque Alzheimer's / Butterfly Unit
Tonight my wife and I had an early Thanksgiving Dinner with my Dad who lives in the Butterfly unit aka the Alzheimer's unit at an Albuquerque facility. As we fed my Dad, trying to communicate with him, help him stand and shuffle up and down the halls looking at the same artwork visit after visit. I watch my Dad who no longer knows me, wither away both physically and mentally and I miss him.
Alzheimer's is such an angry beast taking no prisoners. With each visit the sadness deepens, a darkness comes over the soul and sends my mind into a scared place. I miss the strong, vibrant, highly educated, intelligent man. I miss my Dad. I miss the man that was a pilot and one of the best Auctioneer's in the state of NM owning his own business. I miss my Dad. I just really miss my Dad!
Don’t take today for granted. If today’s not a good day - make it a great day! This Thanksgiving I hope you take time to count your blessings, be thankful for the things we take for granted like being able to eat, drink, walk, talk and think for ourselves. God help the ones that can’t, whether it be due to Alzheimer's, another disease or trauma. Live, laugh and love while you can my friends. We never know when we might just be the next one living in the Butterfly unit.
