A sure sign that Albuquerque’s fall has arrived is the very unusual and almost prehistoric sounds of the Sandhill Cranes migrating to their wintering grounds in the Middle Rio Grande Valley and beyond. During the warm day, cranes find food in open fields, foraging for seeds, roots, bugs, worms, toads, and small rodents. At night the temperature drops and cranes roost on open, shallow sandbars on the Rio Grande. This is not just a season for Sandhill Cranes, other species of wintering birds can be seen in the Albuquerque area as well. If you’re a bird watcher grab your binoculars and cameras and be ready for the show of the many birds! Check out the video below and enjoy the calls from these majestic birds.
