Today marks the New Mexico Centennial Celebration. On January 6th, 1912 President William Taft signed the proclamation admitting New Mexico in the United States as the 47th State of the Union. Obviously the “Land of Enchantment” has a much older history including the historical Palace of Governors in Santa Fe which was built in 1610 over 400 years ago and is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States.
New Mexico was originally occupied by ancient man with archaeological discoveries unearthing the Clovis man, Paleo Culture and artifacts dating to
over 13,000 years ago. Since then ancient Native Americans including the Mogollon and Anasazi have occupied as well as the more recent occupancy by the Navajo, Apache and Ute cultures.
New Mexico is a large state with 121,412 Square Miles of land. The population is sparse with only 2,082,224 people. Albuquerque is the largest city by far with over 545,000 residents, however Rio Rancho blends right into Albuquerque and has the third highest population with over 87, 521 people. The two most occupied counties are Bernalillo which holds Albuquerque and
Sandoval which hold Rio Rancho the combination of those two counties is over 794,000 so a large portion of New Mexico’s total population.
There will be New Mexico Centennial celebrations all over this great state to commemorate her 100 th year. Here are some links with much more information on this historical event.
