Facebook Ads ~ are they worth it?

Mimi Foster always brings important issues to our attention.  This one concerns Facebook.  A network media most of us utilize. Please leave your comments on Mimi's page.  See you in the Rain!

Via Mimi Foster - Colorado Springs Realtor Managing Broker (EPIC Real Estate Group Colorado Springs Real Estate):

Many people work hard to increase the number of Fans they have on their Facebook Fan Page.  Used as business advertising for their product or service, many have paid substantial amounts for ads to increase their number of subscribers to reach a greater number of potential clients.

facebookBut what often is unknown is that, because of Facebook's algorithms and their belief that they are enhancing user experience by limiting exposure to who sees you, many are shocked to find that only 16% of fans are actually seeing your content.

AdAge had an interesting article yesterday to discuss the new model of how Facebook marketing will work.  Facebook has even been so bold as to suggest to corporations (some have upwards of 20 million users on their Fan Pages) how those companies should handle their social media as Facebook rolls out its new model.  Instead of 'ads,' Facebook will now be selling 'stories.'  If you want to reach more of your fan base, that will be an easy thing to do . . . for a price.  The larger the percentage that you want to reach, the more it will cost you.

The fans that were bought with a price don't really belong to you for marketing purposes, only a small percentage of those that Facebook deems should be seeing you.  As they prepare to go public, their IPO will bring a lot of changes to the look and feel of Facebook, not the least of which will be a greatly increased visibility of advertising.  It will be interesting to see what the coming year brings to the ever-changing social media landscape.
