True Real Estate Guide: Is a Condo Right for You?

In Sarasota, Florida, condominiums often offer access to abundant amenities as well as a comfortable, maintenance-free lifestyle. Still, condo living isn't for everyone.  Below is a checklist to consider if you're on the fence about buying a condo.

true real estate guideMaintenance: A maintenance-free lifestyle is an excellent reason for buying a condo. Many have onsite staff to take care of common areas, repairs, and more. However, if you're a Do-It-Yourself-er, you may feel restrained by condo living.

Yardwork:  Escaping yardwork and other outside chores is another reason many choose the condo lifestyle. However, if you're a green thumb, a condo may not give you enough room to "grow."

Security: Security is another popular reason to buy a condo. Many have manned front desks, keyed entries, even armed security. If all this makes you feel more comfortable, then a condo may be perfect for you.

Amenities vs. Fees: Condos can offer amenities galore (spas, pools, fitness centers, salons, saunas, etc.).  However, every condo has association fees (part of which pay for these amenities). So if you doubt you'll take advantage of community amenities, you may not want to pay for them as part of a condo lifestyle.

Rules: When you buy a condo, you're also buying into a community with rules.  For example, some condos forbid home-based businesses and some prohibit pets. Before you buy a condo, make sure you read the covenants, restrictions, and bylaws of the condominium association carefully, and agree that you can abide by them.

Storage: Storage space can be tight in condos. Some have storage lockers. If not, you might consider commercial rental storage facilities. However, if you have lots of collectibles, valuables, etc. that you don't want to part with, a condo may not be a good choice for you.

Neighbors:  No matter where you're thinking of living, you need to consider your neighbors.  In a condo, this is likely even more important because you will usually be living in closer proximity.  So make sure you get a sense of your condo "neighbors" to decide if you'll be comfortable in this community.
