Attention! Attention! All First Time Buyers

A gorgeous rug is the soul of the roomBuying a house and transforming it into a home, is no easy feat.  Especially the first time around. You’ve come from a rental or maybe owned someplace smaller, and while lucky and grateful to be in your new place, OVERWHELMED is also the operative word.

Here are Five tips from a seasoned designer, to make this process a little bit easier:

Color Confusion?  You bought red walls and realize that color is not your cup of tea.  Don’t paint first-That is the last thing you do.  Go rug and carpet shopping and fall in love.  Rugs are the soul of a room and that is where you start.  Grab color from this rug for the rest of the room, the walls being LAST!

Low Ceilings??  Somehow, you think you just grew a few inches-must be that you are standing up straight and filled with pride.  Well it could be that the ceilings are a bit lower than that pre-war apartment that you came from.  Consider using vertically striped wallpaper or faux finishing to create the illusion of height.  The stripes can be subtle, but the subtle change in height is well worth it!

Space Challenges???  You realize that even though you thought you’d have tons of room, the flow of the houseA den must double for a guest rooma is not exactly what you had envisioned.  Try using furniture that doubles as something else.  For example, these new “klik klak” sofas are wonderful in an office that doubles as a guest bedroom.  And, they are not a big investment so by the time you build that addition, you will have gotten your money’s worth.

Open Floor Plan????   It’s space and airiness that you wanted and that’s what you got.  But how do we tie the rooms together? Grabbing a color from that new rug you are buying, try using the same hue, just a different intensity. Wall color is important but easily changed-furniture is expensive and should be compatible throughout the home.

Limited Financial Resources?????  Do it right, the first time.  Call an interior decorator!  While you will pay for services, you will not make costly mistakes that you will regret.  HGTV can not replace professional talent and expertise, in your home!  Just think of the time and energy it takes to sell things on Craig’s List.  And you get fractions for second hand furniture, no matter how much you originally spent.  Certainly not enough to replace it.
