Blue Pumpkins

Well it is fall and everyone is thinking pumpkin,  but my wife does more than think about them.  This time of year we go out and buy Blue Pumpkins.

Now most people think of Orange Pumpkins, but for baking you want a Blue Pumpkin.  I should warn you a Blue Pumpkin does not look pretty, in fact the look grey.  I don't think anyone would buy something called a Grey Pumpkin, so they call the Blue.

That Blue Pumpkin is ugly but it taste wonderful.  They also have a lot more meat in them than other pumpkins.  My wife bakes them (after cutting them in half and gutting them) then peels them before pureeing the meat.  And you get a lot of pumpkin puree.

Pumpkins are a great food and I understand why they were so popular in the pioneer days; they can store for a long time before going bad.

We often think of pumpkin as something sweat and sweat pumpkin foods can be great; but pumpkin is a squash and can make great savory foods too.

Here is some of what we have had or will have with Fresh Pumpkin:

  • Soup (two types so far)
  • Pancakes
  • Fritters
  • Chili
  • Pie (the best I have ever had)
  • Fudge
  • Cookies
  • Bread
  • Sticky Buns

and what ever else we can come up with.
