Boy And HorseI had a college roommate in my dorm who was a power lifter in weightlifting holding a teenage record in the deadlift. We talked about strength all the time, he outer strength, me, inner strength. He had a quote, "If you are weak you cannot be strong, but if you are strong you can be gentle." I studied more about gentleness in the Bible as a 'fruit of the Spirit.' I think

Being Strongly Gentle Is An Art Form

Gentleness reflects serving others in our business and personal lives with openness and not harshness towards them. It does open us to pain inflicted upon us with the vulnerability of running over Mr. Nice Guy. It can if we are "gentle" turn us into a doormat with no one respecting our meekness.

The key to NOT letting that happen is being "assertively" gentle and showing your bounds, just NOT allowing yourself to be a doormat with people taking advantage of your gentleness.

I will admit the FIRST time you are open and get trampled upon by someone, it stings, it is a surprise, but then you shift into your STRONG self and not allow yourself to be disrespected. It is a HUGE GIFT you give someone when you are gentle to them and so often in what can be a dog eat dog cruel world I sometimes think the other does not even realize the gift they are getting, or never experienced that level of love expressed as gentleness in their lives before and they think you are just a wimp. NOTHING could be further from the truth with the STRONGLY GENTLE person. Their WISDOM kicks in as strength ON TOP of their gentleness and they are not to be pushed around with the gift of gentleness given up.

The illustration I picked for this post involved a horse. I love horses. Big lovable beasts they are. I have witnessed so many times first hand little children, young girls and even adult women of short stature and thin built frames maneuver these majestic VERY large animals all around a field. It is the perfect example of respect and being strongly gentle I can think of.

Serve others, let yourself trust, let yourself be vulnerable, but from your INNER STRENGTH part of you, be strong and assertive with your gentleness. People will get the best of two parts of you if they recognize it. They will come away from that experience that you are one of those rare people in the world that has that quality, the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT, that is practicing the fine art form of GENTLENESS.

Gentleness means that you realize that you have the potential to cause damage but instead you choose not to. You choose to be careful with life, with you, and with those around you. You choose instead to pause. Gentleness is strength under control.
