Mourning Doves Move In
The Facts:
Mourning Doves are quite common. They like to perch on power lines, walls and are found in open fields pecking on the ground for seed. The male decides where the pair will nest in early spring.
The Mourning Dove mates for life. When you hear the calling it’s their way of communicating with their mate and babies. When a mate dies the other calls in the longing and heartfelt mourning coo.
The Story:
This spring a couple of Mourning Doves built a nest in the inside corner of our covered patio. We tried to shoo them away before they nested but they won moving right in. They are now raising their second set of babies for this season. They take turns sitting on the eggs and babies until the babies have feathers and have learned to stay quiet and still without parents around to protect them.
The first baby Mourning Doves are now pecking around the backyard under the feeders, drinking and bathing in the fish pond waterfall and entertaining us. We watched as the male Mourning Dove taught the first babies survival skills while Mom was busy nesting on the second pair of eggs.
Over the weekend while on a ladder trimming vine around our patio I snapped this picture of the latest baby Mourning Dove. There was actually another baby but Dad was hiding it. I say Dad because male Mourning Doves have a blue hue on the top of their heads like this one does.
We have decided to leave the nest this year and let them continue onward raising babies. We’ve learned they’re not messy, quiet and actually cool birds. Much smarter than we had given them credit for in the past. The Mourning Doves don’t seem to be afraid of us. In fact they don’t even pay much attention to we humans. I’m glad they won the battle and moved right in.
